I Didn't Ask, But You Did It Anyway

I didn't ask you to leave your home. I didn't ask you to leave behind your spouse and kids, family, friends. I didn't ask you to leave the farm that's been in the family for generations. I didn't ask you to leave your job that you worked so hard to get. I didn't ask you to go to a foreign land whose people, language, and culture you didn't know. I didn't ask you to take the life of another person. I didn't ask you to watch your buddies get killed while giving them cover fire as they were bringing a wounded man to safety - no man left behind. I didn't ask you to drive the Humvee on the road when the land mine went off. I didn't ask you to risk your life for me, for us. I didn't ask you to die for me, someone you will never even meet, never even know. I didn't ask you to sacrifice all that you sacrificed in order to keep our freedom safe. BUT! You did it anyway. For this I thank you! There is nothing I can do, nothing I can say, that will be sufficient for what you did for us. All of our military; past, present, and future; those who died and those who survived. Whether you were jumping into a trench in Germany, in the hull of a ship in the Pacific, in a fighter jet over Korea, flying a Huey chopper on a MediVac mission in Vietnam. Whether you drove a Humvee in Kuwait, or operated a UAV in Afghanistan, or was the pilot that brought our soldiers home on a C-130. I thank you all for your service. And I thank you for all that you sacrificed so that the rest of us back home don't have to. May God bless you all; past, present, and those to come.
