“Go and Make Disciples”: Living the Great Commission Today
After His resurrection, right before returning to the Father, Jesus gathered His disciples on a mountain in Galilee and gave them His final instructions. These words are known as the Great Commission:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18–20
What Is the Great Commission?
The Great Commission is Jesus’ clear assignment to His church: “make disciples of all nations.” In the original wording, “make disciples” is the central command, and “going,” “baptizing,” and “teaching” are the ways we carry it out.
This means our mission is not just to collect quick decisions, but to help people truly learn to follow and obey Christ in every area of life.
Why It Still Matters Today
Jesus began by declaring, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” The Great Commission is not a suggestion from a teacher but a command from the risen King, backed by His authority over heaven and earth.
He ended with a promise: “I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” We do not go in our own strength; we go with His presence and power, empowered by the Holy Spirit to be His witnesses “to the ends of the earth.”
How We Live It Out
You do not have to be a pastor or missionary to live out the Great Commission. It begins right where God has placed you—your home, school, workplace, church, and community.
Go: Be willing to step out—across the street, across the office, across cultures, or across the world—wherever God sends you.
Make disciples: Focus on people, not just moments. Share the gospel, walk with others, answer questions, pray with them, and help them grow in Christ.
Baptize: Encourage new believers to publicly identify with Jesus and His body, the church, through baptism in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Teach: Help others learn and obey everything Jesus commanded, not just by words but by modeling a life of surrendered obedience yourself.
When ordinary believers embrace this call, the church becomes a living witness of Jesus in every neighborhood, school, city, and nation.
A Personal Invitation
The Great Commission is not just a church program or slogan; it is God’s mission for every follower of Jesus until “the end of the age.” If you belong to Christ, you are already part of this story.
Ask yourself:
Who in my life needs to hear the good news of Jesus?
Where has God already placed me as a missionary—my family, my job, my friendships, my online presence?
Who could I walk alongside and help grow as a disciple?
Jesus has all authority, He has given us His mission, and He has promised His presence. Let’s say “yes” to the Great Commission and trust Him to work through us as we go, make disciples, baptize, and teach in His name.
